“Yoga does not just change the way we see things, it transforms the person who sees.” — B.K.S. Iyengar
On 8 July 2026, our activity studio fell unusually quiet. Rows of mats had been laid out, house pennants stood along the mirrored wall, and students of Classes III to VIII sat waiting in the colours of their houses.
What followed was not the noise of an ordinary school competition. The Inter-House Yoga Competition at Vandana International School, Sector 10, Dwarka, was won and lost in stillness — in held breath, steady balance and the quiet discipline of a body doing exactly what it is asked to do.
Four Houses, One Discipline
Our houses came dressed in red, blue, green and yellow, and for once the usual cheering had to be set aside. Yoga rewards concentration, and every participant needed all of theirs.
Judged by our yoga instructor on alignment, steadiness, breath control and composure, students moved through a sequence of asanas that tested very different capacities:
- Standing postures such as Tadasana and Urdhva Hastasana, which look simple and are anything but — they demand alignment from heel to fingertip.
- Seated forward bends such as Paschimottanasana, which reveal a student’s flexibility and, more tellingly, their patience.
- Backbends including Chakrasana, requiring strength through the shoulders, spine and legs together.
- Balance postures, where the smallest lapse in attention is immediately visible.
Students of Classes III to VIII displayed exceptional flexibility, balance, strength and composure — and, in a room full of mirrors and watching classmates, a good deal of courage as well.
Why Yoga Matters for School Children
Parents sometimes see yoga on a school calendar as a pleasant extra. In the middle-school years it is doing considerably more than that.
- Posture and spinal health. Children today spend long hours seated at desks and on screens. Yoga counteracts the forward slump that habit produces, at exactly the age when posture is being set for life.
- Concentration and attention span. Holding a posture while regulating the breath is sustained-attention training. Many teachers notice the effect carrying over into the classroom.
- Managing stress and examination anxiety. Breathing practice gives a child something practical to reach for when they feel overwhelmed — a skill that becomes more valuable each year they advance.
- Strength and flexibility without competition against others. Unlike most sports, yoga measures a student against their own previous limits, which makes it welcoming for children who do not consider themselves athletic.
- Emotional regulation. The habit of slowing down, breathing and observing oneself is the foundation of self-control.
- Discipline and self-awareness. Progress in yoga is impossible to fake and impossible to rush. Children learn that quickly.
Yoga is also, of course, part of India’s own inheritance — a practice thousands of years old that our students are fortunate to receive as a birthright rather than a fashion.
A Competition in the Right Spirit
There is something fitting about an inter-house event built on a discipline that teaches non-attachment to winning. Our participants competed hard, and then applauded one another warmly.
Every performance reflected focus, determination and self-control. The competition reinforced the values of healthy competition and inner balance, and reminded a studio full of young people that strength and calm are not opposites.
Our Congratulations
Warmest congratulations to all our participants and to the winning house for performances that were, by any measure, impressive for students of this age.
To those who did not place: the hours you spent learning to hold a posture were not spent for a certificate. You have acquired something that will still be useful to you in thirty years.
Health at the Heart of Learning
At Vandana International School, we believe physical education is not a break from learning but a part of it. Our commitment to holistic development, physical wellness and mental well-being is reflected in a calendar that gives sport, yoga and movement genuine space alongside academics.
Our thanks to our physical education department and yoga instructor for their preparation and fair judging, and to our house teachers for the encouragement that got these students onto the mat in the first place.
Because a child who learns at nine how to steady their own breathing has been given a tool they will use for the rest of their life.
