  • Saluting the Tricolour: Independence Day Celebrations at Vandana International School

“Freedom is not worth having if it does not include the freedom to make mistakes.” — Mahatma Gandhi

Every year, as the fifteenth of August approaches, something changes in the air at Vandana International School, Sector 10, Dwarka. Corridors bloom in saffron, white and green. Rehearsal songs drift out of classrooms. Small hands colour in paper flags with enormous concentration.

For us, Independence Day is not merely a date on the school calendar. It is a morning of remembrance, gratitude and quiet pride — an occasion when our students stand together to honour the countless men and women whose sacrifice made their present possible.

A Morning That Begins with the Flag

The celebration opens, as it always must, with the hoisting of the National Flag by the Principal, followed by the National Anthem sung by the entire school community. There is no sound in a school year quite like several hundred young voices singing the anthem in one breath, and no silence quite like the one that follows it.

A march past by our school prefects and house captains adds solemnity and discipline to the morning, reminding everyone present that freedom is upheld by responsibility as much as by celebration.

A Tribute in Song, Word and Movement

What follows is a cultural programme lovingly prepared over weeks of rehearsal, with students of every wing contributing:

  • Patriotic Songs: Choral performances of beloved patriotic songs fill the auditorium, sung with a sincerity that no rehearsal can manufacture.
  • Dance Performances: Vibrant group dances celebrate the diversity of our nation — the many languages, costumes, folk forms and traditions that live together under one flag.
  • Speeches and Recitations: Students speak on the freedom struggle, on the leaders who shaped it, and on what independence asks of their own generation.
  • Dramatic Presentations: Skits and tableaux bring key moments of India’s freedom movement to life, turning history lessons into something our students can see and feel.
  • Little Hands, Big Hearts: Our youngest learners take part with flag-making, tricolour craft and simple patriotic rhymes — their first, joyful introduction to the idea of a nation.

Remembering Those Who Gave Us This Day

Woven through the morning is a tribute to the freedom fighters and to the soldiers who continue to guard our borders. Our students are reminded that the independence they were born into was won at great cost, and is protected daily by people they will never meet.

It is a moment of genuine reflection — brief, sincere, and one that lands more deeply with each passing year.

From Celebration to Commitment

The heart of the celebration lies in what comes after the applause. Our students are encouraged to ask what patriotism looks like on an ordinary Tuesday: in honesty, in respect for others, in care for public spaces, in kindness towards those with less, and in the pursuit of excellence in whatever they choose to do.

Freedom, they learn, is not only something we inherit. It is something each generation must earn again through the way it lives.

Nurturing Responsible Citizens

The Independence Day celebration at Vandana International School reflects our enduring commitment to instilling values of patriotism, unity, service and responsible citizenship in our students. Alongside academic excellence, we believe our children must grow into adults who understand what they owe their country and one another.

As the tricolour flutters over our campus and the last strains of the anthem fade, our students return to their classrooms carrying something a little more lasting than a flag pin.

Jai Hind.
